What Paychex PEO costs — and what to pin down before you sign

Paychex runs one of the largest payroll operations in the country and a PEO on top of it. The PEO is custom-quoted; nothing is published. That makes the questions you ask more important than the number on the first proposal.

Short version: custom quote; the proposal combines payroll, HR guidance, benefits, workers’ comp, and risk management; premiums, plan administration, and retirement-plan fees sit outside the service fee. See how it compares →

How Paychex prices its PEO

Paychex does not publish pricing for its HR PEO; independent guides (Gusto, June 2026) confirm there is no verified public formula. The quote bundles payroll processing, HR guidance, employee benefits, workers’ compensation, and risk-management support. Costs beyond the service fee include insurance premiums, plan administration, and retirement-plan fees, and termination or transition charges depend on the agreement you sign — so read the signature packet, not the proposal.

Inside the quote

Payroll and tax administration, HR support, benefits administration, workers’ comp administration, safety and risk resources, and the Paychex platform.

Outside the fee

Benefit premiums, retirement-plan fees, plan administration, and any add-on services; confirm each in writing.

Strength

Scale and a deep payroll back office; a natural fit for employers already on Paychex Flex who want benefits and HR added.

Watch

Exit provisions and renewal pricing. Ask for the notice period, the renewal cap, and the transition charges before the first invoice, not after.

Who Paychex PEO tends to fit

  • Employers already on Paychex payroll who want to add benefits and HR without changing platforms
  • Companies that want a large, established provider with a broad service menu
  • Multi-location employers who value a single national vendor
  • Less likely to fit: employers who want a named, hands-on HR partner, or whose decision turns on hard-to-place workers’ comp

Fit is our read from pricing structure and public positioning, not a review of Paychex’s service.

Ask these before you sign with Paychex — or anyone

  • Is the fee flat per employee or a percentage of payroll — and what happens to it when you give raises or add overtime?
  • What is the fee on employees 1–10 versus 50+? Most PEOs step the rate down with headcount; ask for the schedule.
  • What is the renewal cap? If the contract doesn’t limit year-two increases, assume there isn’t one.
  • Is workers’ comp on a master policy, and what class codes did they assume for your crews?
  • What are the exit terms — notice period, who owns the benefits plan year, and what it costs to leave mid-year?
  • What is billed outside the fee: implementation, state registrations, background checks, 401(k) administration?

Where we stand on Paychex PEO

We don’t place Paychex PEO often. If a Paychex proposal is already in front of you, bring it and we line it up against two to four PEOs we quote regularly — same census, same comp assumptions, same benefits contribution — with the exit terms and renewal cap on the same page as the price. Paychex is a trademark of its owner. My PEO Pros is an independent broker and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Paychex. Pricing facts are from Paychex’s public website or clearly labeled third-party estimates as of November 2026; your quote is the only number that counts.

The proposal is the price for year one. The signature packet is the price for leaving. Read the second one first.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Paychex publish its PEO pricing?

No. Paychex HR PEO is custom-quoted, and independent guides confirm there is no public formula.

What should I check in a Paychex PEO proposal?

The fee structure, what premiums and plan fees sit outside it, the renewal cap, and the termination and transition charges in the service agreement.

Does using a broker make Paychex cost more?

No. The PEO pays the broker fee out of a budget it already carries, and the fee is the same whichever PEO you choose. You get the same Paychex quote — plus alternatives on identical assumptions.

Can you get me a Paychex PEO quote?

We don’t place Paychex PEO often. If you already have a Paychex proposal, bring it and we’ll price it against the PEOs we quote regularly so you can see where it stands. The comparison is free either way.

No-cost comparison

Have a Paychex proposal? Line it up.

Headcount, states, and the proposal if you have one. We’ll bring back 2–4 PEOs we quote regularly on identical assumptions so you can see the gap.
